DIGIHEALTH ATM
Linking Healthcare to People in Need
People in far-flung communities, such as those in Catanduanes, Cagbalete and Romblon, face a stark reality: they need to travel a considerable distance, allot most of their day, and spend on costly transportation, just to reach a health facility where they can get diagnostics tests and doctor’s consultation. This barrier of distance, time, and cost often dissuades many of them from visiting the health facility unless their condition is already moderately severe or even alarming. This already compromises their health.
Obviously, in order to protect their health and prevent serious or even life-threatening illness, they need access to healthcare right in their communities. However, setting up an entire diagnostics and clinical infrastructure in remote communities is not always possible.
This is where the DigiHealth ATM (Automated Telehealth Machine) provides a crucial link between the people and healthcare services. The Digihealth ATM performs a broad range of point-of-care health measurements and diagnostic tests, generates digital health information, and facilitates communication between patients and healthcare professionals. It also provides results that are generated digitally (via email) or printed for the patient.

The Philippines is a country of thousands of islands, diverse communities and widely varying access to healthcare.

For people living in urban centers, medical facilities and specialists may be relatively accessible. For those in geographically isolated or underserved communities, however, obtaining healthcare can mean travelling considerable distances, taking time away from work or family, or facing costs that can discourage people from seeking care.

There are also gaps in the availability of healthcare professionals, diagnostic services and health information.

These challenges matter because healthcare is often most effective when problems are identified early and patients can receive appropriate advice and care in a timely manner.

DigiHealth ATM is user-friendly and operates similarly to a bank ATM which provides instant results. While most people can use it in a self-service manner, there are staff assistants on-hand to assist users. The machine makes it easier to obtain health measurements, establish a baseline for monitoring one's health, and gather information that helps healthcare professionals determine whether further assessment or treatment is needed.

How it works
DigiHealth ATM is portable, versatile, and usable in a wide range of settings. Apart from their use in remote areas, they can also be installed and used in various corporate settings, e.g. for employee annual health checkups. The Department of Health pilot tested the system for approximately 500 employees. Their health measurements and diagnostic information were made available within minutes. The initiative demonstrated another potential application: bringing selected health services to people in settings where they can be accessed faster and more conveniently.
